Things to Know Before Driving in Ibiza

Ibiza is an island of pleasure and entertainment that attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists like a magnet. Here you can not only relax, recharge and feel like a paradise on earth but also visit the places listed in the UNESCO heritage. To travel through the scenic areas of Spain's most popular resort, it is best to rent a car.

Although this island is considered the epicenter of nightclubs, recreation, and freedom, drivers in rental vehicles are treated with caution. You can pay from 100 to 500 euros for a minimum traffic violation. In the worst case, you can even have your auto confiscated. So to make your trip memorable with beaches, scenery, and music, and not with fines and conflicts with the police, you should familiarize yourself with the basic driving rules in Ibiza.

Main requirements for a driver in Ibiza

There are different age limits for driving in Ibiza and renting a car on this Balearic island. Officially you can drive an auto from the age of 18, but most rental services require an additional fee if you are under 25 years old. You must also prepare some required documents for a rental agreement:

  • A full and valid driving license, sometimes an International Driving Permit is needed along with your home driving license

  • Passport or another type of ID

  • Credit or debit card

  • Printed voucher of your online booking

Without at least one of these documents, you can not rent a car in Ibiza.

The peculiarity of the driving rules in Ibiza is not only the presence of necessary documents for renting a car but also the presence of some things in the auto: Warning triangle, Reflective jackets, GB sticker or Euro plates, Replacement tires, and headlamp beam deflectors. If you do not want to pay a fine for breaking driving rules in Ibiza, make sure you have these things with you.

Is an International driving license important?

The requirement for an international license depends on which country you are coming to Ibiza from. If you are a citizen of the EU, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you do not need to make an additional international driver's license. If you are a citizen of another country, you have to apply for an international driving license back in your home country. You can duplicate the document in English or Spanish after receiving it.

You should get out of your auto and place red triangles 50 meters away from the car. If 2 or more vehicles participated in an accident, you should take pictures of them and describe the report of this situation in detail. You should also call the police as fast as possible. It is an important step if you don’t want to have a conflict with other drivers. Inform the 112 line about the problem if the accident is serious and dangerous to your health. Be prepared to fill out the accident report:

  • When and where the accident happened

  • Information about the vehicle that you rent

  • Information about you as a driver

  • Circumstances of the accident, for example, weather conditions, speeds involved

  • Details of insurance companies and policies of all drivers

  • You should be ready to illustrate and explain the accident including details

  • If there are witnesses

  • If there are injuries

  • If there is vehicle damage.
